Hey all, it’s Doug from Thought Shrapnel. This is just a midweek test of Substack.

While this weekend’s newsletter will be going out via the usual method, I’ll be making the switch to Substack from Sunday 1st October.

Thanks for reading Thought Shrapnel! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.

Posts and microcasts will still be available on the Thought Shrapnel website. I have no intention of paywalling the newsletter, although (as I have done before) I may offer the ability to optionally support this labour of love and keep it going.

Three things to note

  1. Wondering why you’re receiving this? If I’ve made a mistake and accidentally re-subscribed you after you opted out of receiving this newsletter, than my apologies. Just hit unsubscribe (again) and you’ll not hear from me again.

  2. MailPoet is great, but weird. Related to the above, while the MailPoet plugin for WordPress is in many ways fantastic, it weirdly unsubscribes people or marks them as ‘inactive’. This is obviously suboptimal if you’re trying to send emails to people who want to receive them.

  3. Substack is great for discovery. Some of my favourite writers are already using Substack, and if it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for me! Also the Notes feature is great, almost like a social network for writers.

In no particular order, here’s a list of five publications that you might like if you’re a fan of Thought Shrapnel:

Ribbonfarm Studio

Ribbonfarm Studio: Serialized projects from the Ribbonfarm blog
By Venkatesh Rao

imperfect offerings

There's a crack in everything. It's how we know a human being is writing. Thoughts on technology and education, writing and related issues, from a critical perspective. Not always fully formed but never auto-completed.
By Helen Beetham

Bryan’s Substack

Exploring where emerging AI might take colleges and universities.
By Bryan Alexander

Second Breakfast

The history of the future of food and fitness technologies. Or: How I get through the mo(u)rning.
By Audrey Watters

Just Two Things

I monitor what’s happening out there—economics, technology, culture, climate—and write two notes on what catches my eye. The brief: interesting, provocative, resonant. With some analysis and context. Frequency: usually three times a week.
By Andrew Curry

So, to reiterate, things will be as they were this weekend (24th September) but I’m switching to Substack for the newsletter on 1st October.

I’ve updated links to the newsletter over at the Thought Shrapnel site, and paid ($50!) for a fancy custom subdomain: https://newsletter.thoughtshrapnel.com

Feel free to reply with questions, comments, and concerns! 🫠
